Mobile Devices
Is your business ready for the Mobile Revolution?
Before you answer, consider this:
The coming "Mobile Device Revolution" is considered by most Internet analysts and website developers to be the fifth major technology cycle of the past half a century.
This is an ideal opportunity for your business to add a "mobile website" to work in tandem with your existing "full scale" website. Here is an overview of how this revolution is happening and how it may change the way you do business:
Emerging technologies and infrastructure changes that will effect your business:
Wireless networks are getting faster and more wide spread, e.g. 3G networks (3G = speed of data) are evolving to 4G networks, quickly. Faster data and more widespread coverage means people can use their smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices more often and in more places.- Mobile Apps are developing very rapidly — An example: Quick Reference Codes often referred to as "QR Codes" are turning up just about everywhere. (see our explanation of QR codes below)
- Geolocation — Mobile devices generally have "geolocation" apps installed on them (this can determine quickly where you are, similar to GPS). Since your device knows where you are, it can tell you what is located near you and even guide you to your destination by voice.
- Mobile devices such as Android and iPhone systems use touch screen controls and voice activated controls that allow Users to browse your mobile website easily. Commonly then a "call now" button will activate device phone system and predial the website's telephone number. Can you see where this is going?
Let's drill down to an example — QR Codes
Many of you may have seen this before. For those who have not, let's dig into it. Quick Reference or "QR Codes" can be 2D graphics that when "scanned" by QR Reader software provide the Reader with a website address. So where do you find QR Reader software? In your mobile device!
How can I get started using a QR Reader?
To get started, do a Google search from your smartphone for the model of your phone along with "QR reader". You may also have access to the Android or iPhone marketplace directly from your smartphone (or a QR Reader may already be installed on your new smartphone when purchased). You'll find plenty to choose from. Install the Reader on your Mobile device and you are ready to go.
Simply launch your QR app, point your mobile device at a QR code anywhere and open the website address!
You will find QR codes just about anywhere from the back of tee shirts to large trade show banners. Imagine standing in
front of product manufacturer or service provider's store counter or tradeshow booth, scanning their QR code with your mobile device and then watching a one minute video of the product in action from anywhere, anytime. This is but a small example of the potential marketing power of the Mobile Device Revolution.
